This image is based upon the biblical narrative of the Exodus. The hand is symbolic of the “mighty hand of God” which stretched out to free the Hebrew children from the African Pharaoh. The eye and mouth symbolize hearing and seeing the oppression of the Hebrew children, while the outline of Africa contextualizes their location. The single figure carrying the child is indicative of the Hebrews braving the wilderness as God’s covenantal bride, while the bearded figure represents Moses. The hands of the people are stretched out towards Moses and god as they seek leadership and direction from Moses and Yahweh. The raging elements are symbolic of divine power and the harsh wilderness environment. The broken shackles indicate God’s divine power to free those who are bound by oppression.
